HISTORY OF THE BUCHANAN COUNTY FLAG
The Buchanan County Flag was designed by Chastity
Robinson of Whitewood High School in December 1997. This is the first flag in the history of
Buchanan County. The events surrounding
the design of the county flag began in September 1997.
The county government and other county offices were
often asked to display their county flag at different events throughout the
state of Virginia. Since the county did
not have a flag, the need to design a flag which would be representative of the
county became an increasing desire of local officials.
The Buchanan County Office on Youth sponsored a flag
design contest which ran for five weeks and sought entries from Buchanan County
students in 6th through 12th grades up to age 19. The Office on Youth received a total of 38
entries for the contest.
On December 18, 1997, the Buchanan County Board of
Supervisors held a continued board meeting at the Appalachian School of Law in
Grundy, Virginia. Office on Youth
Director, Sue Justice, appeared before the Board of Supervisors and asked the
board to pick a winner, second, third, and honorable mention design.
Board members examined the entries and then voted,
choosing Chastity Robinson as having the winning art design; Leisha Salyer as second;
Kristy Stewart as third; and Samantha Howell as honorable mention. The board then voted to accept the design as
the county flag and for the purchasing department to proceed with getting the
art design printed and made into a flag.
The Buchanan County flag now flies over the Buchanan
County Courthouse. The flag is not only
representative of Buchanan County’s history but also of the youth who
participated in its creation.
A plaque is displayed in the Buchanan County
Courthouse engraved as follows:
